Delta Xi Nu
Multicultural Sorority was established at Texas A&M
University by five women who saw a need to promote
friendship, diversity, and cultural awareness at the
university and in the surrounding community. They
envisioned an organization where women of all cultures
would feel welcome, create lasting friendships, and
educate and serve the community. The founding mothers are
Rena Kharbat, Adrienne Magirl, Jetje Brewton, Lesliam
Quiros, and Jaime Slaughter. Being African American,
Dutch, Irish/Mexican, Palestinian, and Puerto Rican, the
founding mothers wanted to show the world that it was
their differences that had brought them together and made
them stronger. All their hard work became a reality when
Delta Xi Nu Sorority was finally recognized as a student
organization on October 7, 1997.
In the Spring of 1998, Alpha Chapter held the first annual
Unity Dinner. The dinner’s purpose is to bring students,
faculty, and community members together and challenge them
to think about culture and diversity in a way they never
have before. Past keynote speakers include Kevin Powell
from MTV’s Real World, former skinhead Frank Meink, and
Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez. Over 200 people have attended
the event in the past. Alpha Chapter’s philanthropy is
AIDS awareness.
On December 7, 2001 Delta Xi Nu inducted the Beta Chapter
of Tulane University located in New Orleans, LA.
Beta Chapter’s signature event is Shadows of Diversity.
This event showcases the talents of the Tulane and New
Orleans community. Everyone is invited to participate and
share the uniqueness of their culture. The talent show is
followed by a dinner consisting of foods from various
cultures. Beta Chapter’s philanthropy is children’s
education.
Gamma Chapter of Delta Xi Nu Sorority was inducted on
April 17, 2004 at Colorado State University in Fort
Collins, CO. These women chose Frindship Festival as their
signature event. It’s purpose is to celebrate not only
cultural differences, but also the similarities that all
human beings share. Various student organizations set up
booths around the campus plaza and entertainment groups
perform throughout the day on a main stage. The women of
Gamma Chapter hope to bring all CSU Greeks together and
celebrate unity. Gamma Chapter’s philanthropy is domestic
violence and drinking and driving.
Delta Colony of The University of Texas Pan American was
inducted on April 16, 2005. The women are holding their
first annual signature event, Dining with Culture, on April
21, 2006. The event consists of unique cultural
entertainment while guests feast on a diverse cuisine.
Delta Colony’s philanthropy is domestic violence against
women.
On March 25, 2006, Epsilon Colony of Delta Xi Nu was
inducted at Sam Houston State University. Their signature
event is Destination Diversity. Guests can explore different
cultures by visiting booths, listening to live music, and
enjoying dance acts. The ladies' philanthropy is Children's
Health Awareness.
Zeta Colony was inducted on April 29, 2006 at the University
of Texas Arlington. Their signature event is Stomp out AIDS
and philanthropy is Sexual Awareness.
In August of 2000, the Delta Xi Nu National Board was
established in order to provide unity among all chapters
and colonies, provide a central point for operations, and
maintain the Sorority’s corporate affairs. In June of
2001, the National Alumni Association was founded to allow
our sisters to continue the mission of promoting
multiculturalism and to help our organization continue to
grow. |
